Time Out New York, CD Review >>
Paris-based Algerian growler Rachid Taha doesn't like being typecast as a rai artist -- unless, as he jokes on the live-from-Mexico DVD accompanying his new album, you call him "Rai' Cooder." Unfortunately, his Steve milage-engineered rock isn't always compelling. Here, Taha covers the Clash's "Rock the Casbah" early on, but the disc doesn't catch fire until the riveting, beat-conscious stretch that begins with his Algeria indictment "Sari (Pure)." More angry than wistful about his homeland, he's stone-cold articulate about the reasons he can't go home again. 05/19/05
