Sunset Promotions proudly presents Rachid Taha, in a rare San Francisco performance. Taha, born in the Gulf of Oran during the peak of the Independence War era, was raised in France. His music is a product of the nomadic crossbreeding that has been his life and reflects the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped him.

Fusing traditional Algerian “rai” with arabo-gallic funk, electro-rock arabesques, acid-jazz, reggae and worldbeat, Taha is an internationally known and celebrated artist. Always outspoken, provocative and controversial, Taha is a hero to many liberal Arabs and progressive Muslims.

Starting his career in the early 80’s, Taha has recorded and performed all over the world. His past collaborations with Stanton Moore, Rich Vogel and Jeff Raines of Galactic, Brian Eno, Steve Hillage and even Femi Kuti proves Taha to be one of the most innovative of crossover artists. Taha’s most recent release, TekiToi (Universal / France) is trenchant yet delicate, halfway between Led Zeppelin and Johnny Cash, straddling the line between East and West without compromising either.

Warming the stage is local world-music legend Cheb I Sabah (Six Degrees records) offering sonic journeys through Asia, Africa and Arabia.  06/28/05 >> go there
