Philly City Paper, CD Review >>
Algerian-French rocker Rachid Taha stirs up his political outspokenness with his love of North African instrumentation, punk music and electronica to create a fiery brand of rock that defies easy categorization. With ouds (Arabic lutes) and darbukas (hourglass drums), the rough-edged but never abrasive Taha creates something uniquely emotional on every track of his latest album, Tékitoi? He even pulls off a joltingly potent version of The Clash's "Rock the Casbah" that takes on new meaning in our grave new world. --Nicole Pensiero Tue., July 5, 8 p.m., $22, with The Exit, Theater of Living Arts, 334 South St., 215-922-1022, www.theateroflivingarts.net. 06/30/05
