Algeria's Rachid Taha caters more to Western listeners, singing his distictively Arabic melodies and rap-like patter over a loud rock beat. He even covers the Clash's "Rock the Casbah" on "Tektoi" (a 2004 CD remixed and repackaged this spring as "Who Are You?" -- with fewer tracks). Ethnic-music purists might sniff, but it's fine introduction to the alluring sounds of the Algerian music known as raj.
