AFRO-LATIN PARTY (Putumayo World Music) is subtitled "a celebration of the Latin sounds heard in nightclubs from Dakar to Havana." (A bonus track features a cooking Croatian salsa band named Cubismo.) Popular music does not get any better than on the coasts of the South Atlantic Ocean. People from the Northern Hemisphere call it "World Music," which implies the pejorative prefix "Third." The complex, syncopated, rhythmic counterpoint - a cowbell right on top of the beat, the bass skipping behind it - takes you to a place where, whatever you call it, it is almost impossible to refrain from shaking your butt. 03/23/05
