Afro-Latin Party (Putamayo) provides a representative sampling of styles from Africa, Latin America, Cuba, Martinique and Puerto Rico, some of them excellent, some of them forgettable, but each of them instructive in showing the rhythmic connections across regions and continents. The band Africando’s selections “Betece” and “Demal” are exciting, particularly with Medoune Diallo’s crooning lead on “Mandali.” José Magual Jr.’s “Ritmo Con Aché” and Cubismo’s “Morenita” are alternately throbbing salsa and sensuous romantic fare, while “La Huelga Me Paró” from Ronald Rubinel’s Salsa Kolor and “Samba Luku Samba” from Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca provide some contemporary textures to classic salsa and samba respectively. The notes are in three languages, and like most Putamayo releases offers those with limited interest in the spotlighted styles one good collection and serves as a nice beginning for fans anxious to hear more. 03/25/05 >> go there
