Murder Dog, CD Review >>

This is an offering of ten danceable tracks (all with vocals) in the Afro- Latin tradition, which of course, encompasses many parts of the world, but is heaviest in Africa, the Caribbean, and NYC, but very widespread other parts of the Americas.

The group Africando stands firmly in this Antillean tradition. They contribute three strong selections, featuring a different singer for each cut. "Betece" and "Demal" both feature excellent tres (a Cuban six stringed instrument) reminiscent of Arsenic Rodriguez, the father of that style.

JoseMangual Jr.& group contribute the outstanding "Ritmo Con Ache". The Yoruba-santeria word, ache, represents the cosmic life force, expressed through dance on this piece. Mangual, a well known "Nuyorican" has many recordings to his credit, including his early and famous mega-selling salsa records with people like Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe. Ska Cubano: Think of a funky ska version of Babalu, and you get the idea of this fun track. Cubismo is billed as Croatia's best salsa band, while Pepe and the Bottle Blondes Hail from Portland, Oregon. Chico Alvarez also has a solid contribution, again with Cuban tres, punchy horns, and a solid latin groove. Paris-based super Zouker Ronald Rubinel of Martinique gives another effective straight ahead salsa track to round out the collection.
