The Warsaw Village Band has been receiving notice all over Europe with their stunning blend of traditional Polish Folk music, forward-thinking arrangements, and guest turntable specialists. “Uprooting” is their 2nd release. The music is raw and spirited, yet the harmonies are finely textured. The interplay between the szuka (knee-violin), violin, cello, and dulcimers is quite accomplished.

Traditional drums, called baradan and frame drums, keep the pulse going. All the songs are traditional Polish songs rearranged with the help of mentoring guests such as Janina and Kazimierz Zdrzalik and the Marian Pelka Band. Another part of the futuristic sound is Feel-X and Mario Activator providing the electronics that effortlessly mix with the ancient “White voices” – near screams, primeval harmonies performed by the women in the group.

At times both hypnotic and somber and lively and spirited, this is Polish music you may have never heard. It’s no straight-up Polka!
