Burning Spear quote ("Remember your past but keep it livin' in the future") sets the vibe for this inventive Polish sextet as they push and pull 16 ceremonial bridal songs, fables, love ballads, dance tunes and anti-war declarations. The stories are beside the point unless you're fluent in Polish; it's the droning rhythms and intriguing counterpoint of different musical elements -- the siren and frame and baraban drums cresting on rising wave of cello, violin and dulcimer ("In the Forest"), for example, or the trance-like vocal harmonies over live scratches, xylophone and drum 'n' bass ("When Johnny Went to Fight in the War") followed by Maja Kleszcz's appropriately mournful a cappella vocals ("Lament") -- that make this percussive music arresting.
