The hoarse chanting and tribal tom-tomming, the silvery sheen of cymbalon and the medieval sawing of fiddles, signal that thsi is no polka band. And that's not all there is to Warsaw Village Band, who employ traditional folk instruments such as dulcimer and hurdy-gurdy, electrongic and Eastern Europena traditions, to create a powerfully postmodern, tribal-trance sound. The Polish band is determined to bring the spirit of their country's past into a timeless zone and to deftly avoid the pitfalls of many self-consciously clever word music groups, who mix and match styles and periods without finding an organic connection between the elements.
