Traditional Polish music goes far beyond tame polkas or klezmer, and the world can thank the six young hipsters from the Warsaw Village Band and their various guests for giving international exposure to a different, mesmerizing side of the Polish soul. The band members rejuvenate their ancient heritage for this century on "Uprooting" (World Village) with what they call "hardcore folk," which fuses subtle dub effects and record scratching with deep rumbling drums, dulcimers, various tuned and untuned strings and a haunting female chant called "white voices." This eerie, ecstatic, singing creates the dramatic otherworldly sound and feel dominating the album.

The music and lyrics are traditinoal, but the arrangements are fresh. Tracks include work songs, reels and dervish-like materail. There are touches of blues on "Grey Horse" and beatnik-style jazz on "When Johnny Went to Fight in the War." The a cappella yearning on "Lament" and the mysterious simplicity of "Fishie" are just beautiful.
