He invented Afro-neat and even set up his own republic as part of a unilateral declaration of independence from the authoritarian regime ruling Nigeria and his on-going rebellion against tyranny, oppression, injustice, and corruption. In return, he suffered harassment, beatings, jail terms and torture. But a decade after his death, Fela Kuti remains probably the most significant and influential musician to emerge from Africa onto the world stage. And what music he made-his Afro-beat rumbled like thunger and cracked like lightning, as if he was tapping into some elemental force to which only he had the key.
