Drawing from the gorgeous details of Turkish Sufi ritual - the soothing ney (reed pipe) and infamous Rumi-inspired Dance of the Whirling Dervish - Mercan Dede creates the sacred in new contexts. Taking instruments such as the darbauka, santur and trumpet (as well as his beloved ney), looping them live and feeding them back through layers of digital editing and sonic feedback loops, his 21st century future Arabic folk is a technological mythology unto itself. Featuring female Dervish Mira Burke and touring in support of his latest release Su (Doublemoon), Dede's show is a beautiful testament to studied artists reinventing their cultural tradition with an instinctual flair for modernism.
