There's a nightmarish quality about the fifth album by Montreal-based Turkish sound wizard Dede, who finds an in triguing place where techno, trance and tradition intersect. While much of the 73-minute disc threatens to fall into lounge- chillout-ambient monotony, its oddly seductive groove mostly wards off boredom. The conven tional instruments, like Hugh Marsh's violin and Serham Yas- diman's classical guitar, also help to brighten up the sonic landscape and provide an oasis in Dede's arid beat foundation. Susheela Raman, herself no stranger to Westernizing East ern music, guests on Ab-i Beka, while Dhafer Youssef shows the power of his voice on the har rowing Ab-i Kazan, While some editing would not have been un welcome, Su's exotic blend is hard to resist.
