The title of Turkish composer Mercan Dede's disc means "water," and it could symbolize his vision of international musical ideas flowing together. But even if this image and his electronic atmospherics seem tranquil at first, Dede's constantly surprising shifts are hardly easy listening. What sounds like Arabic devotional chants are woven around Sheema Mukherjee's Indian sitar on "Ab-I La'l" before a jazz horn section and Hugh Marsh's electric violin shapes "Ab-I Hayat." Overall, it's a seamless effort, until a somewhat jarring rapper appears towards the end of the disc.
