There's a nightmarish quality about the fifth album by Montreal-based Turkish sound wizard Dede, who finds an intriguing place where techno, trance and tradition intersect.

While much of the 73-minute disc threatens to fall into lounge-chill out-ambient monotony, its oddly seductive groove mostly wards off boredom. The conventional instruments, like Hugh Marsh's violin and Serham Yasdiman's classical guitar, also help to brighten up the sonic landscape and provide an oasis in Dede's arid beat foundation.

Susheela Raman, herself no stranger to westernizing Eastern music, guests on Ab-i Beka, while Dhafer Youssef shows the power of his voice on the harrowing Ab-i Hazan.

While some editing would have been welcome, Su's exotic blend is hard to resist.
