GlobalGiving Serves as Official 'Giving Platform' for Donations to Projects of The New Heroes on PBS
Tuesday July 5, 6:21 pm ET

WASHINGTON, July 5 /PRNewswire/ -- GlobalGiving, an Internet-based service for international philanthropy, is partnering with the Skoll Foundation, a major underwriter of The New Heroes, to allow individuals and groups to contribute directly to projects being led by the social entrepreneurs featured in this new PBS documentary. Hosted by Robert Redford, The New Heroes tells 12 dramatic stories of individuals around the world who are developing innovative solutions to challenges facing their communities.

The first two hours of the four-hour series premiered on June 28,
and was viewed by more than one million households. Many more will see the final two episodes of The New Heroes, which will air on most PBS stations on Tuesday, July 5, from 8 to 10 pm (check local listings for details).

In addition, the Skoll Foundation is taking an innovative approach by promoting House Parties and
distributing hundreds of free DVDs that feature select segments of the program. Through these informal events, groups of people-such as neighbors, family members, friends, co-workers, students, or church members-come together to watch the documentary, engage in a discussion, and pool their resources to make financial contributions to the projects. The House Party DVD can be ordered at www.thenewheroes.org, which also provides a direct link to GlobalGiving for contributions.

Donations made through GlobalGiving as a result of a House Party will be matched by the Skoll Foundation through August 31 (up to $100,000).

"GlobalGiving is making it possible for anyone to support the amazing work that you see in The New Heroes. The Skoll Foundation is pleased that GlobalGiving is partnering with us to help unleash the potential of these social entrepreneurs to do more of this work-and make positive change happen," said Sandy Herz, the Skoll Foundation's vice president for marketing and communications.

"We believe this emerging bottoms-up model of international giving complements the traditional channels through which international development dollars are being provided today," said Dennis Whittle, founder and chairman of GlobalGiving. "There is significant evidence that smaller participants in the development sector are often more innovative in creating solutions, but find difficulty having their voices heard."

GlobalGiving connects social entrepreneurs with people and organizations who have the means to help support them, providing donors-whether at the $10 or $10,000 level-with a transparent, engaging, high-impact experience, where donations go directly to projects so donors know exactly how their money is being used.

The New Heroes is produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting in association with Malone-Grove Productions, Inc. Major funding was provided by the Skoll Foundation; Calvert and the Flora Family Foundation provided additional funding. About GlobalGiving

Founded in 2001 by two former colleagues from the World Bank, GlobalGiving is the first Internet-based platform for project-specific global philanthropy. The organization's vision is to build a highly efficient philanthropy marketplace where individuals, corporations, and other institutions can find and directly fund social, environmental, and economic development projects around the world. By aggregating many donors, GlobalGiving enables NGOs of all sizes to tap into a new source of funding that goes directly to the project level, giving every dollar more impact. Since GlobalGiving launched in 2002, it has facilitated the flow of $1.6 million to fund over 400 projects.

GlobalGiving's major funding partners include the Skoll Foundation, the Hewlett Foundation, Omidyar Network, US AID, and the Sall Family Foundation. Additional funding has been provided by the WK Kellogg Foundation, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, and Hewlett-Packard.
