Ion Petre Stoican
"Song From A Bygone Age, Vol. 1"
Talk about bartering in exchange for surrendering a secret agent to the Feds in the mid 60's, violinist Ion Petre Stoican was granted any reward he desired. A studio contract was worked out and he gathered a crew of top Lautari musicians in his native Bucharest, Romania. Now, as an obscure lineage to traditional Balkan folk strings emerges in America (thanks to projects like Shantel's Bucovina Club), this rough gem includes magnificent interpretations of gypsy songs. The dizzying array of cymbalom ( hammered dulcimer), double bass and violin - interspersed with sorrowful clarinets - highlights the schizophrenic tendencies of Eastern European soul. This album's breakneck atmosphere stands the test of time, as worthy of play today as when Stoican watched his dream manifest. It was his only record; given the melancholic tinge of his outing vocals on "Ia-Ti Mireasa Ziua Buna," Stoican gave all he had.
