Romanian violinist Ion Petre Stoican’s Sounds From A Bygone Age, Vol. 1 (Indigo) features some furiously played, exciting gypsy music made in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Stoican’s flourishes, dips and amazing solos are just one part of the attraction. It would be nice to know who the accordion and clarinet players are, as well as the bassist, because they’re not only ably backing Stoican, but often challenging or augmenting him through the short, but jubilant music being executed on such tunes as “Hora Lui Sile,” “Mosule, Te-As Intreba,” “Hora Lui Mihalea” and “Sirba De Joc Din Constanta.” Stoican’s fluid, easy swing will certainly remind fans of not only esteemed jazz violinists like Joe Venuti and Stephane Grappelli, but jazz-rock stylists like Michael Urbaniak, Jean Luc-Ponty, Sugarcane Harris and Michael White. Hopefully, a second volume will follow this one very soon.  08/04/06 >> go there
