New York Times, CD Review >>
What's the theme from "Survivor" doing in the ecumenical Christmas - er, solstice - pageant that the Paul Winter Consort mounts every December at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine? It's actually a traditional Russian song performed by the Dmitri Pokrovsky Ensemble, part of the international cast on this recording of the 25th edition of the pageant. Sweetness and awe predominate. In between the Irish pipes, Zimbabwean thumb piano, Brazilian ballads, potential movie themes, wind sounds and whale songs, Mr. Winter's soprano saxophone keens new-age melodies made for the cathedral's reverberations. It's all very earnest: one world seen from the well-meaning Upper West Side.
