Early Egyptian music by an ensemble whose Arab members come from all over the world, "Soul of a People" is an eclectic listen of the blending of traditional Arabic and Egyptian music with the styles emanating from the Orient and Western hemisphere. The album celebrates Darweesh who brought us this incredibly intriguing mixture of varied music. A religious man whose first job was as a reciter of the Koran, Darweesh spent much of his first musical experiences as a bit of a failure. His folk tales were a bit nationalistic though there was plenty of class disparities as well as progressive discussions of women's rights. Eventually catching on with not only other musicians but fans in his era, Sayyed Darweesh is celebrated on this beautiful album. 04/27/06 >> go there
