Hicham Chami, a native of Morocco who lives in Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood, leads this ensemble, which brings the vocal songs of Egyptian composer Sheikh Sayyed Darweesh (1892-1923) back to life with passion. These authentic, traditional performances may sound harsh at first to American listeners looking for the latest Starbucks-friendly world pop, but once you've immersed yourself in the music, the intensity becomes almost hypnotic.
