New Yorker, Concert Preview >>
Central Asia is often in the news these days, but little attention is given to the region's musical heritage. The three acts in this concert might change that. TengirToo, from Kyrgyzstan, which is led by the multi-instrumentalist Nurlanbek Nyshanov, features a komuz (three-string fretless lute) player named Zainidin Imanaliev, famed for his flamboyant performance style. The Academy of Shashmaqâm, from Tajikistan, keeps alive Sufi-inspired court music. Homayun Sakhi is a noted rubâb (short-necked lute) player from Afghanistan who now lives in Fremont, California. 03/13/06 >> go there
