Via Kabul: Central Asia Without Borders with Tengir-Too + The Academy of Maqam + Homayun Sakhl
Miller Theatre at Columbia University, Tue 21

During Ihe final decades of the 20th century, age-old musical traditions in thenalionsof Central Asia wire nearly initially by Soviet mod ernization, in some cases fcillowed by fundamentalist Islamic repression. Deli- rate threads of oral transmission were severed as instruments were destroyed, musicians persecuted or worse.

In 2000, the Aga Khan, heredi tary imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslim sect, established a program intended not only to document native shies but also lo rejuvenate them as living, evolving traditions. On March M. Smithsonian Folkways released the first three installmentsof an elaborate, ten-volume CD/DVD series, Music of Central Asia, sponsored by ihe Aga Tenglr-Too Khan Music Initiative. A five-city tour featuringthe performers htardonthose sets Kyrgyz ensemble Tenviy Too. Tajik-Uxbek troupe the Academy of Maqam and -based Afghan tt/ftd/Jvti'iuosoHomayunSaklii pulls into Manhattan this week.

Tengir-Too's Mountain Music of Kyr^yzstati is the most immediately an-esriny set of the series's initial burst. A chorus of Jew's harps flicker like electronic trance music in "Jangylyk," a product of composer Nurlan'bek Nyshanov's conservatory training. Zainidin Imanaliev, a veteran singer and komuz player only reluctantly con vinced to perform again, sink's of lost love in "Kiiidum Chok." with a voia: as eerie and haunted as thatof another leg endary mountain man. Ralph Stanley. But the Academy of Maqam's fonnal, omateSitficeremoiiyancISjikhi'sflorid, athletic ragas will just as readily touch any listener attuned to the vibrations of human heartstrings.
