Tengir-Too

¡°Mountain Music of Kyrgyzstan¡±

Smithsonian Folkways

Somewhere in the empty mountain lands of Kyrgyzstan, lonely horsemen might be crouching by a fire, twanging on Jew¡¯s harps, three-stringed lutes and two-stringed bowl fiddles, blowing into simple flutes and calling out centuries old epic poetry or throaty songs of life, their notes drifting into distant space with the sparks.

This disc, the first in a new Smithsonian Central Asia series, captures something of the essence of that picture. The music is more refined than the simple ensemble would suggest. The average listener is unlikely to discern all the nuances therein, but the accompanying booklet and DVD enlighten with lyric translations, a documentary and interactive features on this spellbinding music and the virtuosos who play it.
