BBC The World, Biography >>
Today's Global Hit takes us through many languages, styles and emotions.
The singer is Sara Tavares. She's Cape Verdean. She grew up in Portugal's capital, Lisbon. Tavares is 27 now, and had an early career as a teenage pop star. But her young life was marked by loss. She was abandoned by both of her parents. Her father came to the US to find work.
Her mother took off as well. So Tavares was raised by a family friend. In this song, she compares the loss of her parents to the end of a romantic relationship. She sings, "you have left me with this love and pain. My soul is broken up in a scream."
But remarkably, most of the time, Tavares sings about the good things in her life. This tune displays that other side of her musical character.
It's called "Bom Feeling," or "good feeling." Tavares goes back and forth to Cape Verde every year, she says, to stay in touch with her roots.
Tavares sings in many languages: Portuguese and Angolan slang, Cape Verdean Crioula and English. She also plays guitar and some percussion. The CD is called "Balance".
Sara Tavares will be touring the US this summer.
