Balance (Times Square)
Lisbon-based vocalist Tavares takes a fresh approach to celebrating her Cape Verdean lineage, substituting jazzy syncopation for the flowing melodies and bluesy soulful morna songs generally associated with the culturally fruitful island. Thank- ftilly, she does so without watering the music down into pop pablum. Her light vocals ride gracefully on breezy affirmations like the title track and "Lisboa Kuya" as well as the more urgent, allegorical train song "Poka Terra," though introspective ballads such as "Ess Amor" and the guitar- inflected "Guisa" prove more emotion ally compelling.
