Sara Tavares Balance (Times Square Records)
The vocalist from Lisbon mixes Portuguese, English, Angolan and Cape Verdean crioulo in her lyrics, and she blends European, African and Caribbean influences in her music. Born of Cape Verdean parents who abandoned her, she was raised by a Portuguese woman and now identifies with the street culture of Africans in Lisbon. Balancing the freedom of jazz with the sadness totfado, she expresses the need for acceptance and self-esteem in a soft, breathy voice that sounds alternately childlike and sexy. Accompanying herself on guitar and backup vocals, she is supported by players of accordion, piano and percussion. The musical style is simple, the sentiment honest, the rhythm made for dancing.
