Closing with a release from the "lost Portuguese Caribbean island of Cape Verde," Sara Tavares sings for a generation of displaced young "Cape Verdeans and Africans living in Lisbon who expe rience the identity crisis of being torn between the cultures of Europe and Africa. Her cd Balance (Times Square) combines lyrics, at times search ing and at times rejoicing, with her own scintillat ing guitar work and percolating bass and percus sion. "The whole album is like little lullabies to myself' she says, as she attempts to integrate all the diverse musical elements around and within her. Moving seamlessly from song to song we hear elements of coladeira, reggae, Afrobeat and Angolan semba. Consistently challenging and yet thoroughly accessible, this album has more than few powerful songs that grab the listener's atten tion with the artist's version of Cape Verdean roots- pop music. I use the "pop" moniker because while remaining organically acoustic, tunes like "Bal ance" "Bom Feeling" "Lisboa Kuya" and "One Love" are simply very catchy.  06/01/06
