EMELINE MICHELE, SARA TAVARES

Watercourt at California Plaza
Sun, Jul 2, 3:00 pm
The world needs divas, especially those who dance to the beat of their own soulful drums. Two empowered diasporic sisters, Portuguese Cape Verdean Sara Tavares and Haitian expat Emeline Michel, each write, perform and produce roots-informed yet outward-looking material. Emeline’s voice, more world-weary and resilient than Sara’s mischievous pipes, carries the weight of cultural-ambassadorial responsibility. Old-school compas, carnivalesque rara and a raft of Haitian grooves meld with South African mbaqanga, reggae and other earthly delights on Emeline’s palette. Lisbon native Sara’s sound is light, jazzy, subtly experimental, a reflection of her Afro-European identity. “Balancê,” her CD’s title track, insinuates itself in one’s inner shuffle mode, its melodically spacious interplay triggering a delirious craving. Sara and Emeline stand tall among a new generation of the global sisterhood of song. The show begins at 3 p.m.; Tavares also performs at Temple Bar, Mon. (Tom Cheyney)
