Sara Tavares balances joy and sorrow in 'Balance' |
ARTS BEAT
--Barry Bassis
The title song of Sara Tavares' new album "Balance" (on Times Square Records) is about balancing yourself between sadness and joy. The 27-year old singer- songwriter comes from Cape Verde, an island off the coast of Western Africa, known to world music aficionados mainly for the despairing mornas performed by vocalist Cesaria Evora. However, Tavares, who was raised in Lisbon after her parents deserted her, writes almost all her own material and her music is more upbeat, as expressed by the song "Bom Feeling," which roughly translates as 'Good Feeling." She sings in Portuguese with smatterings of English, Portuguese and Angolan slang as well as Cape Verdean Crioulo.
Musically, her work also crosses genres, mixing Afro-Beat, semba (a style from Angola), Latin American rhythms, funk and jazz. She sings in light, affecting voice, accompanying herself on guitar. Tavares manages to take disparate elements from Europe, Africa and the Americas and forge them into something new. She also has a dazzling smile. This rising star will be at SOB's (204 Varick Street at West Houston; 212.243.4940 ) on Tuesday, June 27 at 8 p.m. 06/22/06
