The Perfect Balance: Sara Tavares

The title song of Sara Tavares' new album Balance (on Times Square Records) is about balancing yourself between sadness and joy. The 27-year-old singer-songwriter comes from Cape Verde, an island off the coast of Western Africa. Tavares, who was raised in Lisbon after her parents deserted her, writes almost all her own material, and her music is mostly upbeat, as expressed by the song, "Bom Feeling," which roughly translates as "Good Feeling." She sings in Portuguese with smatterings of English, Portuguese and Angolan slang as well as Cape Verdean Crioulo. Meanwhile, her work also crosses genres, mizing Afrobeat, semba (a style from Angola), Latin American rhythms, funk and jazz. She sings in a light, affecting voice, accompanying herself on guitar. Tavares manages to take disparate elements from Europe, Africa and the Americas and forge them into something new. This rising star will be at SOB's (204 Varick St. at West Houston; (212) 243-4940) on Tuesday, June 27 at 8 p.m.
