Portuguese singer Sara Tavares will perform Sunday, Sept. 23 at the Vasco da Gama Portuguese Club, 355 James St. Call 368- 1707 for more information.
Tavares, 27, combines Portuguese, Cape Verdean and African influences in her music. Her family is from Cape Verde, an island off West Africa that once was a colony of Portugal.
"Our generation feels very lost because there is no culture spe cifically for us, that talks about our reality," she said.
Her new album, "Balance," includes music in different languages and references to various cultures. Tavares struggled to find her own identity while young because she was not raised by her parents, but by a woman in Portugal.
"The whole album is like lullabies to myself," she said. "All the messages are about self-esteem, loving yourself, loving what is different in you and about integrating all the parts of you."
Bridgeport has many residents with Cape Verdean roots, as do eastern Connecticut and eastern Massachusetts. The city also is home to many people with Portuguese ancestry. 09/13/07
