The 28-year-old singer is based in Lisbon, Portugal and is one of Cape Verde's most acclaimed young stars. She writes her own songs (12 of 13 here are originals) and plays guitar. Her music is filled with Lisbon's Creole mix of language, culture and, particularly, rhythm, with even a little English in the songs ("One Love"). There is a Brazilian sensibility on this album. Overall, the approach is soft, acoustic based and more sensual than compelling. Highlights are the breezy title track and "Planeta Sukri," a duet with Boy Ge Mendes. Because the language is foreign and the music mostly subdued, the lasting impression is general rather than specific. Tavares will perform Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Strand Theatre in Rockland.
