Auktyon is a band from St. Petersburg, Russia, that has been making radical music in its homeland for more than two decades. The versatile rock group has embarked on its first full-scale tour of North America, and they'll be at the World Cafe Live on March 22.

The band - which will be releasing a made-for- America CD titled "Pioneer" in August - fea tures Oleg Garkusha (vocals), Nikolai Rubanov (saxophone and clarinet), Dmitri Ozersky (key boards), Leonid Fedorov (vocals), Viktor Bondarik (bass), Boris Shaveynikov (drums and percussion) and Mikhail Kolovsky (tuba and trombone).

"The band started in Leningrad," Rubanov said during a phone interview from his home in Russia. "Now, it's been together 20 years and the city is called St. Petersburg.

"It was still the Soviet Union when the band started, but we didn't have to do underground con certs. We had access to different places where we could play out music. It was the last days of the Soviet Union, so the rules weren't as strict.

"But we had practically no advertisement for our music or our shows. Most of the time, the informa tion had to be transmitted from one person to another."

Auktyon has built a rep utation for its spontaneity and originality.

"Our music has changed a lot," Rubanov said. "We're constantly chang ing. In the beginning, it was a mix of punk and new wave. Now it's a mix ture of a lot of different styles. That's why the band has existed for so long.

"The main point with Auktyon is not so much making new songs, but rather the musical process itself. Many songs are ones we've played for years. But they keep changing. Everyone can find some thing interesting in our music.

"When we play to Russian-speaking audi ences, it's much easier. Playing to American audi ences is much more challenge. Everything is flexible. For each show, we decide which will be the first song and then every thing flows from there."
