San Jose Mercury News, Great on a Global Scale - CD Review >>
By: Andrew Gilbert
What gall! Even attempting to create a list of the best albums released around the world this year, in a confounding array of styles and traditions, is an act of hubris. But since I receive a large number of CDs by international artists, I'm comfortable recommending several as particularly noteworthy.
All the albums listed here are distributed within the United States and are readily available from Amazon.com or from such record stores as Amoeba. All prices all are from Amazon.
``Kal,'' Kal, Asphalt Tango, $21.98: A self-named session by a sensational Roma ensemble from Belgrade, this is 21st century Gypsy music, dark and celebratory, brooding and emotionally unfettered. Using traditional instrumentation, Kal borrows cannily from its urban environment, where electronic dance music fills the nightclubs.
