Le Trio ]oubran
Randana (Fairplay)

The oud is an instrument like the sitar or the koto - that is instantly evocative of the land from which it comes, and from the first note on Randana, the expansive, nomadic melancholy of the Middle East is brought to the fore. Le Trio Jourban is three Palestinian brothers, playing ouds handcrafted by middle brother Wissam. On this disc, originally self-released, they've opted to explore the more pensive side of Arabic oud music. The five pieces - especially the 18-minute-long "Safar" are dark and deeply exploratory, with the brothers trading off passages in a way that's simple and sparse, yet highly communicative (and unsubtle, thanks to a very distinct stereo mix). Managing to sound both compositionally progressive and timeless-ly traditional, Le Trio Joubran makes music that dreamily invokes the 4,000 years of history behind the instrument they play, but not without being mindful of the present.
