If you think all brass band music is oom-pah, oom-pah, think again. As heard here, Boban Markovic leads an astounding ensemble of brass musicians and percussionists from his native Serbia who collectively have more in common with big-band jazz or a New Orleans second line than with any straw-hat-wearing neo-traditionalists. Markovic’s musicians are alternately funky, jagged, and sinuous with their rhythms, but always propulsive and full of surprising, Frank Zappa-like turns of melodic phrasing.
