LaGuardia Performing Arts Center

Presents Internationally Acclaimed

Argentinean Dance Company on August 3

As part of the JPMorgan Chase Latino Cultural Festival, the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center will present on August 3 the world premiere of a new work by the popular Latin American dance and music company, Grupo Krapp.

Making their New York debut, the five -member Argentinean troupe, which has gained wide acclaim for its exciting and innovative productions, will perform a selection of original works.

"Argentina is known for Tango," said Steven Hitt, managing director of LPAC, "but Grupo Krapp brgins a whole different side of Argentine culture."

The first work, "Project E," which was co-commissioned by LPAC and Queens Theatre in the Park, explores the creation of dance.  In the piece, a group of performers find themselves reduced from their natural size and fantasize about returning to their normal state.  To achieve this, they create strange routines, absurd patterns, and disturbing orchestrations that produce the energy and dtive needed to return to their previous size.

Also performed will be the company's acclaimed "Mendiolaza," a choreographic drama set in the Argentinean town of the same name.  In the town's dance hall, a femme fatale and a riot girl, along with a ladies man, emcee, and a nerd, excite tis bleak town.

When "Mendiolaza" premiered at the 2004 American Dance Festival in Durham, North Carolina, it received glowing reviews from critics.  Dance magazine called the company "insidious;y entertaining," and The New York Times, said, "their vitality, brutal and hilarious" was unquenchable" "Mendiolaza" is sophisticated [and] manages also to be spontaneously and wildly goofy."

Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for students.
