Known as the World's First Reggae Poet, Linton Kwesi Johnson (LKJ) of London delivers Mi Revalueshanary Fren, a compellingly eloquent lyrical encapsulation of the West Indian, African, British black experience in Landan/Inglan/Brixtan/Chapeltoun, from the sixties forward. You can just hear the reggae drumbeat as his verse vacillates among fire, anger, fear, profound loss, and victory. Touching the spirit with real events, LKJ delineates the heartache of wrongful death (George Lindo, Walter Rodney, and the racist massacre of black teens at a birthday party), the deep-seated love of his father ("Reggae Fi Dada"), and the often-miserable plight of black boys ("Sonny's Lettah"). For Christmas, rather than purchasing another Xbox game, give this to your impressionable teen who needs a wider lense on life. "Yout Rebels" will surely stir things up.
