HAZMAT MODINE
Bahamut (Geckophonic/Zpsygoat):
Travel somewhere east of Tom Waits' foggy musical terrain and you might find this harmonica-led. NYC based ensemble. On their debut CD. they engage in sunnier, even more elastic free association, gleefully melding jazz, blues and gypsy music with calypso, reggae and otherworldly throat singing. (Tuva's Huun-Huun-Tu appear on three of the disc's 14 tracks.) Wade Schuman and Kandy Weinstein's lead harmonicas are augmented at various points by tuba, claviola, contras-bass organ and Hawaiian steel guitar; what's more, they all swing confidently and make artistic sense within individual compositions.
