Ecodek's More Africa in Us (White Swan) blends the keyboard musings, flute and sax solos plus programmed works from Andrew McPherson with sweeping vocals by Mali vocalist Samba Diallo and both African and American rhythmic elements as well as dub and electronica influences on such cuts as "In this drum a secret," "Bizuru dub," "Peace Time" and "100 drums." McPherson also plays guitar and sings, and his multiple talents are central to the mixtures working. A solid bonus track "Juju In Those Strings" includes fine kora playing from another Mali musician Mansa Sissoko. The balance between acoustic and electric sensibilities as well as contemporary and vintage aspects is a tenuous one, but it mostly holds on. 01/29/07 >> go there
