Harp, Farka Toure Remix Contest Announced >>

Vieux Farka Toure, the Mali singer-songwriter and son of the late African blues legend Ali Farka Toure, has announced a remix contest in conjunction with Creative Commons, a non-profit organization that provides artists with free tools in order to copyright their work.

The contest will provide the source files from Farka Toure’s song “Ana” (from his self-titled debut album of last year) so that producers worldwide may use the song in remixes and new compositions.

It’s not Farka Toure’s first trip to the remix well; the forthcoming album Vieux Farka Toure Remixed features treatments of Vieux Farka Toure tracks from the likes of DJs such as Cheb I Sabbah, Karsh Kale, Nickodemus, Yossi Fine, Chris Annibell, Eccodek, DJ Center, DK & Cenzo and Fabian Alsultany. Ten percent of proceeds from both records go towards Bée Sago to fight against malaria in Niafunke, the home region of the Farka Touré family in Northern Mali. Bée Sago, a local award-winning organization affiliated with UNICEF, specializes in the manufacture and distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets to children and pregnant mothers in Mali.

”Ana” is currently available at the Creative Commons site, where additional info about entering the contest can be found. Entries are being accepted starting February 7th and running to March 7th.

For more information on the artist, go to the Vieux Farka Toure site.
