Time Out Chicago, Vieux Remix Contest >>

he remix contest is a good way to get some viral hype behind your new record and the global music scene has wisely embraced the practice. For example, Peter Gabriel's Real World label established a precedent with Real World Remixed: Amateur producers download digital samples of both new tunes and classics like Shock the Monkey to reformulate. Today, Vieux Farka Touré, son of late Malian blues great Ali Farka Touré, kicked off a remix contest for his new tune, "Ana," from his self-titled debut. You can find the details on the Vieux Farka Touré remix contest as well as access to the digital files for the track, here. It's being offered under a Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial license, which basically means you're not supposed to sell your version, but you can do virtually anything else with it as long as you attribute the source.

Singer/songwriter/guitarist/percussionist Farka Touré's "Ana" is a bit of a downtempo, loping number, so I'd expect some dubbed-up treatments. The winning track (the judges are looking for "creativity" more than "production quality") goes on Modiba Productions' Vieux Remixed disc alongside remixes by Cheb I Sabbah, Karsh Kale and Nickodemus. And, of course, there's a bit of international prestige that comes with that. I don't know about you, but I'm booting up the Garageband right now. 01/25/07 >> go there
