ccMixter announces Vieux Farka Touré remix contest
Let's get ready to render: a new contest sponsored by Creative Commons' ccMixter project offers remixers access to instrumental and vocal parts by Vieux Farka Touré, with the winning remix to be included on Modiba Productions' forthcoming Vieux Remixed CD compilation, alongside reworks from artists like Cheb I Sabbah, Karsh Kale, and Nickodemus. The son of famed Malian musician Ali Farka Touré, who died last year, Vieux continues in his father's tradition of "desert blues" indeed, the elder Touré performs on two tracks on Vieux's self-titled debut album, as does Malian kora player Toumani Diabaté and the contest is a rare opportunity for bedroom musicians to work with such rarefied material.
Contest entrants have access to various loops as well as raw percussion, horn, guitar, bass, keyboard, and vocal parts; entries will be accepted from February 7 until March 7. Global Beat Fusion's Derek Beres and Modiba Productions' Eric Herman and Jesse Brenner will select the winning entry. (PS) 02/12/07
