VIEUX FARKA TOURE Vieux farka Toure - World Village/Modiba It would not be surprising if each strain of Vieux Farka Toure's debut has a familiar ring - his father was at this game for decades. The 25-year-old son of the late, great Ali Farka Toure provides considerable chops of his own, on guitar, vocally and on the rapid fire of his calabash. The stripped, minimalist approach - something so indicative of the great lineage of Malian blues artists - serves Vieux well, especially when Mamadou Fofana's flute breaks through the chords and shakers of "Ma Hine Cocore" and "Sangare." This concsseness proves equally revelant when two giants of Malian folk step up: Ali, on his last recordings before his death, and kora legend Toumani Diabate, a man that played no small part in Vieux's sonic upbringing. As with any studentship there comes time for learner to become master. Given the strength of this debut Vieux's day is approaching. Derek Beres 04/01/07
