The Virginian-Pilot, CD Review >>

The visions of world-music visionaries Fela Kuti and Bob Marley are being carried on by their children.

In that tradition, Vieux Farka Toure - son of Ali Farka Toure, the late Malian guitar giant - is the heir to his father's legacy.

His debut showcases the same dancing, sinewy-sweet guitar work perfected by his father, a style that emigrated to the New World, eventually forming the bedrock of Southern blues guitar. He plays lead and rhythmand handles most of the vocals. Backed by traditional African instruments and modern ones, most of his arrangements are rooted in traditional, lilting Malian grooves with one foray into reggae rhythms.

Highlights include two guitar duets with his father and a couple with his music mentor, Toumani Diabate, master of the kora, a Malian stringed gourd instrument.

This delightful, rhythmic work raises the curtain on an international talent who celebrates and builds upon his father's rich legacy.
