TINARIWEN
Aman Iman: Water Is Life
INDEPENDIENTE
The first (and last) word in Malian desert rock.

Now fascinatingly signed as Travis and Embrace, Tinariwen's third album again sounds thrillingly unlike anything else on the planet. Singing in their native Tamashek language, the Tuareg band's chanted vocals, withe the odd female ululation thrown in, come rooted in centuries-old tradition. It's their dense, pulsing guitars, with strong echoes of the primal electric blues of John Lee Hooker and Howlin' Wolf, however, that lift them out of world music's usual ghetto. It might not be a recipe for mainstream success, but when the trance-like rhythms kick in no translations are necessart. PETER KANE
