Toumani Diabate, Symmetric Orchestra, Vieux Farka Toure
--By Ernest Barteldes

The son of the sadly departed Malian singer and guitarist carries his father's torch with honor on his self-titled debut solo recording on World Village Records. Ali, despite his initial misgivings about his son following in his footsteps, lends a hand (sessions took place prior to his passing) playing lead on "Diallo," a song whose lyrics speak of a member of the "true fulani people" who does not live like the country's idle rich "who does not have a fat stomach/who does not eat alone in public." The beat is constant, and lends a lot of space for the senior Toure to freely improvise in between the lyrics. "Courage" is one of the highlights of the album—vocalist Issa Sory Bamba joins in with a dramatic vocal halfway through the tune, which has a heavy funky bass and rock-inflected arrangement that could easily fit into the alt-rock medium if it weren't for the language barrier (all the lyrics are in Mali's native tongue). Listen also to "Diabate," a haunting but simply executed instrumental that features Toumani Diabate (kora) and Vieux, who provides a solid acoustic guitar backing, inserting a few solos in between. Definitely a must for fans of West African music. 07/12/07 >> go there
