By Bill Bentley

In the past 25 years, African music has become a constant on our national soundscape. From Hugh Masekala, King Sunny Ade and Fela Kuti's initial excursions to our shores, adventurous seekers of foreign sounds have been able to satisfy themselves with a huge selection of various styles and players, building a formidable presence in the United States for world music. One of the great Malian guitarists was Ali Farka Toure, who died last year but not before becoming a house hold name for fans of African music. Son Vieux Farka Toure now takes up the quest, and redeems himself admirably on his first release. Recorded in Bamako, Mali under the guidance of Toumani Diabate, he takes off on his own ride into the future, wisely avoiding becoming a facsimile of his father's playing. Vieux Farka Toure proves that when it comes to music of the heartland -- no matter what country that might be in -- there is no substitute for an open car and an exciting attack. This is one young musician who has his eyes set on the stars, and his instrument aimed at everyone he can get to listen. Tune in now to discover a man unfolding his life right before us.
